Maspeth is old-school Queens at its best, a neighborhood of families, small shops and restaurants. Maspeth has great views of the Manhattan skyline, but the city feels a world away from homey Grand Avenue's Polish delis and Irishbars.
Maspeth is located on the western edge of Queens in the Community District 5, with a section of the neighbhood west of Maurice Avenue, in Community District 2. From its earliest years as the first British colony in Queens, Maspeth has been a major industrial area. The neighborhood still has a largely industrial character, but with a residential and commercial areas as well. These are located inland in the eastern part of Maspeth. Neighborhood residents are primarily of European descent, although there has been an increasing presence of Koreans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Greeks. Maspeth is served by rail freight lines that follow the banks of Newtown Creek, with most businesses located in the 150 - acre Maspeth Industrial Park. Economic Development issues in Maspeth relate to the lack of packing and to traffic congestion, especially that created by the large trucks coming from the Long Island Expressway heading towards the Industrial Park.
