Elmhurst is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Queens. After being a predominantly white, middle-class community until the 1960s, this international community in western Queens now consists of a large number of residents from Latin America, Asia and South Asia.
The neighborhood appeals to many with its housing in apartments or private homes, a hospital, an accessible commute into Manhattan via trains on Roosevelt Avenue and Queens Boulevard, and a wealth of restaurants, services and retail shops.
Elmhurst is home to two malls, Queens Place and Queens Center, the only suburban-style shopping mall in the borough, and the new Elmhurst park opened to the public in 2011.
Here you will also find some of the oldest churches in Queens, including the oldest standing building in Elmhurst, St.James Episcopal Church, built in 1734 on what is today 51st Avenue and Broadway.
