Far Rockaway

The Rockaways is known for it's beautiful beaches and national parklands. If you want to get away for the day or even half-a-day from the city just hop on the "A" train down to Broadway Channel and enjoy the Atlantic ocean and Jamaica Bay.

The Rockaway Peninsula, with its 11 coastal miles of beachfront property on the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, encompasses most of Community District 14.  Attached to Queens by Broad Channel, the Rockaways are primarily residential although there are pockets of commercial activity and some manufacturers on the eastern side.  Public housing has a significant presence on the eastern half of the Peninsula.  The western half is characterized by more upscall residential communities with a variety of housing types.  Far Rockaway/Arverne is the east end commercial hub; Hammels and Rockaway Park in the center have smaller commercial areas; and Rockaway Park on the western side has a vibrant commercial hub on Beach 116th Street.  Neponsit and Breezy Point have a few local retail establishments.  The ethnic mix of the peninsula differs by area, with residents on the eastern side being predominantly African-American and Puerto Rican and on the western side, predominantly of European descent.
