Richmond Hill

A middle class neighborhood in central-southern Queens, Richmond Hill is rich in history. The Battle of Long Island, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution, was fought in 1776 along the ridge now in Forest Park, near what is now the golf course clubhouse. Protected by its thickly wooded area, American riflemen used guerrilla warfare tactics to attack and defeat the Hessians.  The area is well known for its large-frame single family houses, many of which have been preserved since the turn of the twentieth century. Many of the Queen Anne Victorian homes of old Richmond Hill still stands in the area today.

Richmond Hill is located in the center of Queens in Community District 9.  Richmond Hill's diverse population includes people of European descent, South Asian residents (primarily from India and Pakistan), Central and South Americans (Colombia and Ecuador) and a large Guyanese and Trinidadian community. Jamaica Avenue is a retail hub consisting primarily of small, family-owned businesses engaged in a variety of trades.  Along Liberty Avenue are a variety of food stores and restaurants catering to the multi-ethnic demands of local residents and to the Guyanese community that has gravitated to South Richmond Hill.  Other shopping corridors in Richmond Hill are located along Atlantic Avenue, Hillside Avenue, Metropolitan Avenue and 101st Street.
